How to find your passion and let it set you on fire
By: Adoption.com / FamilyShare
Here are five questions you need to ask yourself today. If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, discover it, and discover yourself. On dates, during interviews, or even in simple conversation, many people will ask one question to help them better understand someone:
What are you passionate about?
When someone asks you that, you might think, what does that mean? Isn’t passion related to relationships? Is she asking about my love life? Do I have any hobbies?
Maybe you’ve thought about this before, and maybe you’re one of the passionate people. But no matter what your circumstance is, you have to find your passion. Why go through life without loving something?
Nathan Gwilliam, CEO of Adoption.com and TEDx speaker, said, “The most powerful weapon on Earth is the human soul on fire. The fire that ignites our human souls is passion.”
If you’re like me, you don’t know where to start. Here are some simple questions to help you find more of who you are through your passions:
1. What do I like to do?
Have you ever stopped to think about what you really enjoy doing? It’s one of the most-asked questions when meeting someone for the first time: “What do you like to do?” Go outside your comfort zone and really find something new you enjoy: maybe it’s painting furniture, rock climbing or gardening. The things you enjoy can tell you a lot about yourself.
2. Who is most important to me?
Think about all the people you interact with every day. Do they know how much they mean to you? What kind of people do you enjoy most? Reach out to your family members and show them that you’re passionate about your family. Words are nice, but actions go a long way. Maybe you’re looking to add more to your family? Being passionate doesn’t just mean romantically — when you’re passionate about people, you’re truly invested in their lives.
3. When am I most happy?
This may be the most important question to ask yourself. And in order to ask yourself this, you must first recognize those moments when you’re really happy. We can go through our day so quickly that we forget to enjoy the times when we’re truly happy. And happiness can be directly linked to the things you love to do. For example, if you’re extra happy when you’re helping someone organize their home, maybe you have a passion for decorating or organization. Or maybe you have a passion for helping others.
4. Am I a passionate person?
Nathan Gwilliam’s passion was helping children find families, and through that passion, he created Adoption.com. He asked people to rate their passion on a scale of 0 to 10. If you rated something a 10 or close to it, that means it is something you are extremely passionate about and something you care for very much.
Try it! List some things in your life (what you like to do, where you go, foods you enjoy, activities accomplished) and rate them on this scale. Figure out what makes you most passionate. If they’re a level 9 or 10 passion, use them to connect with others and to express your ideas.
5. What can I do next?
Now that you know more about what you love, how are you going to let that change you? Take your passions and do something about it. Join a club or group, learn something new, and let your life be full of passions. Your passion will be the driving force behind everything you do. Don’t let life pass you by: become a passionate person today.
