And the problem can go both ways, since some antidepressant drugs can make you gain weight.
Don’t let bones take a beating.
People who are depressed also tend to have lower bone mineral density, meaning they’re at risk for the bone thinning disease osteoporosis. Part of the reason may be that chronic moodiness changes your levels of an important brain chemical that also affect your bones. In addition, certain drugs that treat depression, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s),increase your chances of breaking a bone. They also put you at risk for suffering a serious fall.
Adopt a heart saving attitude.
The same belly fat that makes depression more likely also puts you at risk for heart disease. In fact, suffering from depression raises your chances of a heart attack by 50 percent or more. Experts used to think the link was excess chronic inflammation, which can damage your blood vessels and start the heart disease ball rolling. But new research suggests the problem may be partly due to behavior. When you’ve got the blues,you may be too moody to bother with exercise or other good health measures. That can bring on heart problems. But your body is not doomed to break down just because of the blues. If you can motivate yourself to engage in even simple physical activity, you may find some relief.Share
